CONE
I was keen to utilise some of the harvested timber from the forest as having lived in the area for over twelve years I have realised the surrounding landscape is ever changing and developing. The forest that covers a large part of the Trossachs is constantly harvested and replanted. It's kind of like an organic machine that needs oiling and constant maintenance.
I wanted to create a piece which reflected this cycle of growth, harvesting and utilisation of the materials. One of the subjects put forward in the brief as part of the food chain was a cone. Initially I thought of making a three dimensional cone form with sections of cut timber, but as this idea has been created by several notable sculptors over the years I thought that I should look for another solution.
Again I came back to the idea of the forest being a sort of production line, I've designed furniture in the past and been fascinated with the factory processes involved. With this in mind I decided to stack the logs as if on a roller ready to be fed into a massive anc machine which with one huge laser cut transforming the natural material into an architectural structure. This manipulation of form with one cut signifies the way in which be interact with the natural world and both utilise it and enhance it.
With the Cone sculpture I wanted develop the idea of the whole cycle from the organic to the man made product/consumable and back to the representation of the seed that starts the whole process.
